Well Optimized Small Loft

A wonderful Paris home and workshop that dates back to the late nineteenth century.

This tiny old manufacturing plant of plainpied “L” of only 50 m2 (3.3 to 6.6 m wide and 6 to 8 m long) is put to good use, and decked out in an imaginative and practical way, making real use of the 5.5m ceilings and presence of two extraodinarily large windows.

A well thought out renovation

This amazing loft was renovated in the idea of optimizing space without altering the spirit of the place. “It was all about balance and proportion, they said. We had to enhance the original volume and find more square meters to build a private space. Create an entire floor under the roof would have been the easiest option, but also the ugliest! We would have lost the approval of space, clarity of glass and industrial memory of the place. “  With a mezzanine, the bet is successful! Today, the old workshop combines flawless open and closed spaces, traditional and contemporary materials (wood, metal, glass), color keys and sobriety.

As a semi-independent floor, the mezzanine structure created volumes without clogging. Located in the northeast corner, the staircase has two flights met by a bearing which forms a one quarter turn. The steps consist of two sections of scantlings recovery (6 x 20 x 80 cm), sanded and oiled. Cupboards and wardrobe painted MDF take place below without cluttering the space!

Open living room, kitchen and small office area can be found past the glass door, although all are unified by a parquet floor these space are still clearly defined.

Simple but functional, the kitchen is also known for it’s bright red 50 year old retro (Smeg).

With a stunning and modern combination of colors and material: the tone of honey floors and exposed timbers add warmth against the metal studs and joists. All highlighted by the white color of the walls and the amazing bright splashes of red here and there.

Here you can find the bedroom perched up high creating a loft area.

The bedroom is located between the central part of the frame and the leaning against the gable wall. For added privacy it hides behind the glass window fittings at the top natural light through an added skylight on the ceiling.

The glass and steel form the separation between the bedroom and the bathroom.

The rafters are left exposed. Two skylights are added , one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom, optimizing the ambient light.

The beams of the gable offer cheap one small space library practical and original!

Iris Apfel Manhattan Apartment

My heart surged when reading Architectual Digest I came across the weird and wacky, eclectic and bohemian Manhattan apartment of style icon Iris Apfel.

But style is like charisma. You know it when you see it.

by Iris Apfel

This fact is evident the minute you enter her three-bedroom Manhattan apartment, a Park Avenue aerie she shares with her husband, Carl, that looks a little as if the Collyer brothers had moved in with Madame de Pompadour. To the right of the front door, two stone pedestals piled with art books flank a Baroque console topped by a chinoiserie mirror. Eighteenth- and 19th-century dog portraits line a corridor leading to the bedrooms, and in the boiseried living room, an antique carving of a French mountain dog holds a platter brimming with costume jewelry. Everywhere there are exquisite French chairs, painted Genoese chests, antique paisley shawls, New Mexican santos, and much, much more.

I am so excited to share these images, so much fun, style and color in the one space!

Eclectic at Trump Tower

Finally we catch a glimpse of a Trump Tower apartment that is not governed by the color gold! It is 5 star luury at its very best and up on the highest peak of this building you will literally be living amid the clouds and the stars!

Now this is a truly beautiful home with delicate and ornate pieces. The decor is French Style meets boho chic with more chairs than you can throw a stick at. A marvellous and opulent home,  let’s take a look inside!

The lounge room, check out the view! I wouldn’t be able to decide where to sit first or what to admire first. There is so much going on and although it is cluttered it is still inviting.

Modern Art Apartment

This is the apartment of psychiatrist and socialite Samantha Boardman. Lot’s of color, modern art, and suprising hijinks wherever you look! This is a very cool home that is just as arty as the art that resides within it!

The grand staircase with Warhol’s Del Monte and Campbell’s-soup boxes stacked to the left.

The long hallway from the front door leads into the dining room and is lined with Andy Warhol’s portraits of drag queens.

In the dining room, blue velvet Marc Newson chairs circle the table, and a glass-enclosed biosphere by artist Paula Hayes functions as the centerpiece. On the left wall hangs a William de Kooning painting, flanked by two Richard Prince paintings.

The library is very exciting along with man books you will see a plesiosaur skeleton that the Boardman’s bought at Bonham’s auction house hangs from the ceiling, along with an oversize chandelier found in a store in Palm Beach.

Nestled in the bookshelves in the library are penguin dioramas from John Norwood Antiques and skulls sculpted by Damien Hirst (silver) and Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof (pink).

The home study with its black walls and red desk. Pieces of note: On the mantel, there are glass flowers by artist Alessandro Pianon, and the fire-red lips hanging above are the work of artist Tom Wesselmann.

The ceiling in the more formal living room had to be reinforced to support the weight of the Jeff Koons dog hanging from the ceiling. To the right of the couch hangs a vibrant Cy Twombly painting.
