Traditional Color Combinations

Never underestimate the use of color in a room, color can create such an impact and can completely change the feel of a certain space.

Following are some general color tips on the use of traditional color in a room.

Blues are receding and cool. They can be used in a variety of hues and tones without overtaking a room. Greens and soft yellows make perfect color accents to blue.

Reds are powerful and when working with reds less is probably best. Reds work best when combined with neutrals such as “ecru” or when combined with creams, beige or white.

Yellows are very sunny and cheerful, however this is not really a color for everyone’s tastes. Yellow is best when worked in as an accent to almost all other primary color, but you probably will not use it on doors or trim. Soft yellow walls can look stunning as long as they are offset with fabrics and accessories in other good companion colors.

The following traditional color pairings create rooms that will feel welcoming and comforting:

  • Black and white
  • Black and red
  • Red and white
  • Yellow and red
  • Black, white and blue
  • Blue and white
  • blue and yellow
  • Mauve and sage
  • Brown and beige
  • Blue and green
